Forza Horizon 3 is certainly one of our favorite arcade racers of this generation, but how can you get the best out of your experience with the game? While fast cars are certainly going to help you with that, learning to drift will help you to take corners swiftly and smoothly. Here’s how to do it.

In the first, you have to make sure you have the right tools for the job. Any front engine, rear-wheel drive car will do the trick. One with high horsepower is also preferable. Once you’ve got a car that fits these specs, you’ll want to turn the traction control off on and change your transmission type to manual with clutch. This transmission type is important as it allows you to rev your engine a little more and hold the revs higher than you can on an automatic transmission.

With your car aptly set up, now all you need to do is find some open road and turns to practice on. The best place to go for quiet roads and a few easy beginners turns is a little town in Red Rock in the Southwest section of the map. Start off with your revs high, and slowly build up speed. As you approach and begin turning into a corner, you want to hit your clutch and e-brake at the same time, turn your wheel in the direction of the corner, and then lift off both clutch and e-brake.

As soon as you’ve done this, you’ll want to slightly feather your gas pedal and counter-steer out of the drift. You only want to counter-steer enough so that you’re not spinning out or turning too tightly into the corner. You can use the gas to keep your speed up, but avoid staying on it for too long as this can lead to a spin out.

Don’t worry about earning 3 stars on challenges. Dotted around the map are plenty of “PR Stunts”; speed camera challenges, drift challenges, jump challenges. In each of these, your performance is rated out of 3 stars. Don’t worry too much early on about netting those prestigious 3-star rewards. As you progress through your career, higher star ratings will net you a greater fan boost, so save the high score chasing for later.
